Sustainability In Action
The Greenhouse Gas Protocol has introduced the concept of emission scopes, distinguishing between direct emissions from an organization’s own operations and indirect emissions originating from its supply chain. In 2023, we have started to calculate the CO₂ footprint of all our operations to understand where we stand in term of our footprint by considering 2023 as a base year and track progress on our goals toward reducing our footprint. Sweillem is committed to declare its emissions which were categorized into Scope 1 and Scope 2 but still working on Scope 3.
Scope 1 :
It refers to the direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from sources that an organization owns or controls, such as emissions from fuel combustion in boilers, kilns, or vehicles. In 2023, Sweillem’s Scope 1 emissions totalled 19,963.90 tons of CO₂ (88%), primarily resulting from the use of diesel, natural gas for drying, firing, and degassing processes at our production facilities.
Sweillem has been working heavily since 2020 to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions until we have managed to reduce it by ≥5% through switching to the natural drying process.
Scope 2 :
It refers to the indirect GHG emissions resulting from the consumption of purchased electricity, steam, heat, or cooling. Although these emissions occur at the site where the energy is produced, they are included in the organization’s GHG inventory because they stem from its energy use. In 2023, Sweillem’s Scope 2 emissions location based is 1,464.20 tons of CO₂ (6.5%) and market based is 1,259.20 tons of CO₂ (5.5%) primarily resulting from the use of electricity in our offices and production facility.
In 2023, Sweillem is using ≥5% of the electricity used in production facility from renewable sources as part of the utility’s default offer.
